2 Mile Walk/5k Run/Bike-A-Thon
April 28, 2012
January 17, 2012
Dear Friend,
This year, the Hancock Police Dept., together with the families of Bella E. Appel, Justice C.C. Myers-Cannon, & the latest victim, Logan Sellers will host a Walk/5k Run/Bike-A-Thon to End Child Abuse, and bring awareness to the Tri-State area, there is a need to speak out and become involved in preventing the loss of another life. We need to be the voice for those who cannot speak. According to National Statistics more than 5 children die every day, and a report of child abuse is made every 10 seconds. These are statistics we cannot be comfortable with and there are ways to help.
Every April, the President issues a proclamation declaring April National Child Abuse Prevention Month, calling for a re-committal of local, state, and federal resources to fight against child abuse. In light of several local tragedies, concerned groups within Western Maryland and Morgan Co. WV have joined forces to raise awareness, lobby for children’s rights, and raise funds to support local Child Advocacy Centers. This year money will be going to Safe Place Child Advocacy Center of Wash. Co. & Safe Haven Child Advocacy Satellite Center in Morgan Co. We will have the support of South Mountain BACA & WV BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) who will be present at Widmeyer Park on the day of our event. BACA’s mission statement is to exist with the intent to create a safer environment for abused children, and to empower children not to be afraid of the world in which they live. Children will be able to sit on the Bikes, ask questions, have their pictures taken, & speak to the B.A.C.A. members.
Our Child Abuse Awareness Event will be on Sat. April 28, 2012 with registration starting in Widmeyer Park@ 8 A.M., Lighting of memorial candles for victims who have lost their lives to child abuse will begin @8:45 A.M., 5K Run will start @9 A.M., 2 mile Walk will begin @ 10 A.M. (both walk & run will be held on the Western Md. Rail/Trail, and will be escorted to the starting position at their respective times. The Bike-A-Thon will be held in Widmeyer Park @ 11 A.M., starting at the basketball court and proceeding around the Park. Awards for all 3 Events will be held @12 P.M., along with greetings from Sheriff Mullendore and all our dignitaries. Starting @1 P.M. there will be entertainment throughout the afternoon, provided by Talented Bands from the Tri-State area. The park will be filled with awareness groups offering free literature and give-a-ways, cake auctions, door prizes, raffles, variety of food venders, Schwan’s will be giving away ice cream bars, and plenty of entertainment for everyone. In order to make this day a memorial event for everyone, we are asking for your support. In this economic climate, we understand that not everyone is in a position to donate a large sum of money. There are several ways you can help with the Child Abuse Awareness & Prevention campaign: volunteering your services to help with the event, making in-kind donations of needed items i.e.; water, snacks, prizes for raffles.
